Microsoft issued a security advisory Tuesday, July 7, regarding a security hole in its Video ActiveX control in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer users on the Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 operating systems are vulnerable to the security loophole, which can allow attackers to take remote control of a computer if its user visits web sites with malicious code. To date, attacks exploiting or attempting to exploit this vulnerability have been recorded in China and other parts of Asia.

Microsoft recommends using a workaround procedure to prevent exploitation of the ActiveX vulnerability, for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 users as well, though these systems are not affected.

Since there are no by-design uses for the ActiveX Control within Internet Explorer, Microsoft is recommending that users implement a workaround outlined in the security advisory. Customers can automatically implement the workaround by following the instructions under "Fix It For Me" in the Knowledge Base article for advisory number 972890 on the Microsoft support site.
