Firefox, that open-source wünderbrowser, has surpassed 500,000,000 downloads according to CNet. This is exponential growth, as September of last year saw the 400 millionth download. The wily browser's features have forced major changes upon Microsoft's own Internet Explorer, though Redmond has been unable to integrate add-ons with the ease that most users would like.

As Firefox moves towards Version 3 (currently in beta testing), there are still kinks to work out.

The bad news: the memory leak issue remains, which means that, as you browse and browse, the 'Fox gobbles up more and more RAM. Firefox is designed to run "outside the box", according to leak apologists, but to most of us this is a liability. (Here's an article that may help mitigate this a bit)

The good news: FF3 works with Highlight! Medals of honor all 'round.
