In the dark days before poaching was brought under control, 80% of the elephants in the Luangwa Valley were slaughtered for their ivory or their meat. Today the population has made a resurgence and at last count there were over 15,000+ with 50% of those being in the South Luangwa National Park of Zambia. In the park elephants tend to move in family units vice herds.
