My Hand is a Dolphin: Brock Baker's Meme within a Meme Gets Its Own Song
If you hear the phrase "my hand is a dolphin", do you think of Rebecca Black? You probably should, before the mental image of a pinniped appendage drives you insane.
Okay, "my hand is a dolphin" is a meme that sprung from a parody of a viral video. Let's break it down:
- The viral video: "Friday", by Rebecca Black. So bad it's bad, this is a Youtube staple at this point.
- The parody: "Friday- Brock's Dub", by Brock Baker. A goofy reinterpretation of the song, with various voices.
- The meme: "My hand is a dolphin!", blurted out in the background, when the characters in the video are doing that arm-wave thing in the convertible. That, along with "Everybody's Russian!", have taken on lives of their own.
Taking it a step too far further, Rebecca Skye dedicated an entire song to "my hand is a dolphin". Predictably titled "My Hand is a Dolphin", Skye composed it in a bid to "write the worst song". It's actually a bit better than "Friday", and uses less Autotune.
In its meme lineage, "My Hand is a Dolphin"(the song, not the phrase) is the great-granddaughter of "Friday".
The web is stupid. The web is awesome.
