Airport's 'naked' scanners

Do you get weary of having to remove your jacket and shoes while going through security at the airport?  Or getting the pat down?

How about the new alternative, showing all your naked glory to airport security staffers in the new Rapiscan people screeners?

A full body scanner has been introduced that produces "naked" pictures of passengers, and is now being used on a trial basis at Manchester Airport.

There is no hiding place for breast enlargements, piercings, hip replacements and, more importantly, knives or guns.
This full body image will take away the hassle of undressing, and will be seen by an anonymous security person in another room.
But it also means intimate parts of the human body will be revealed to airport staff.
This is already on the way in North America.  The manufacturer, Rapiscan Systems has posted an announcement on their website that an order for $25M has been placed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.
We appreciate the confidence that TSA has demonstrated not only in the Secure 1000 Single Pose but also in Rapiscans program management, manufacturing, service and logistics capabilities by placing this significant first order.
Will this be adapted throughout the world?  Only time will tell.

Modern technology, don't you love it?

I seldom fly so this is not an issue for me.

I would prefer the scanner.

I doubt anyone would want to stare at my body.

I don't know how I feel about this; it seems weird to me. I bet people will be lining up to apply for those security guard jobs though!

A great disadvantage to terrorists and smugglers who always find very innovative ways to smuggle things into airplanes.

I wonder how religious and other fanatics would react to this. Let us find out if this is against any religion or not.

Run for the books...!

Religion.  I hadn't thought of that, just children and privacy issues.  Hmm ...

They have one at trial at an airport I flew through last week so I must have been seen in all my glory (poor buggers!). Who cares as long as I can get through security quickly...having said that the scan was quick but then you are held until they get the all clear from the remote scanner chappie over their earpiece. Didn't seem any faster to me

"... Didn't seem any faster to me..."

Maybe the authorities shoud provide special training and teach some survival techniques to the poor 'anon' operators.

Definitely their union is going to protest this move..!

Tighter security at the gate will not stop a determined terrorist, but a intelligent & flexible security team can prevent a lot more than a box run by a bored operator...

Remember, aircraft are not the only place we are vulnerable (but it does have a "fear factor" about it) & these people are very good at finding holes & exploiting them. If we just try & plug all the holes we will just block all our freedoms in the process...

War Begets War...
So true

Part of this is an adaptation of terrorist tactic as seen in the Saudi assassination attempt where he swallowed a cell phone explosive (not inserted you know where as originally reported) which was remotely detonated. Standard scanners wouldn't get those most likely whereas the new machines would. Adds a whole new dimension to you are what you eat

I am a naturist, so I would be OK with this.

My concern would be the radiation. Is it safe? Not for those pregnant.

I did not notice any warning signs...but it was an early morning flight so I wasn't too alert and don't really take much notice of those things anyway

They say it's safe, and being used at some airports in the US and Canada already.  It's getting a favorable reaction too, apparently.

The scanner uses Terahertz radiation, a band that lies between microwaves and infrared. The so-called "T-rays" carry much less energy than X-rays, which means that while they can penetrate a layer of clothing, they cannot penetrate materials such as water and metal. This also makes them much safer than X-rays.

I don't really want some random person seeing my naked body but more importantly what about kids? My daughter is going through pubity and needs her privacy, she would be traumatised knowing a strange man or woman is seeing her naked body. Also would it pick up tampons as "strange" packages, can it see inside the body?

I saw this on the television set.

I see the advantages of this technology but it's sure disturbing putting that kind of opportunity in the hands of authoritative strangers.   How long till this is so common that they think it's okay to make cracks and laugh at people?  Or perhaps they'll get so immune that they manage to stay professional.  I dunno.

I do know I already will choose any alternative transport possible over flying, which used to thrill me unendingly, simply the restrictions are enough.  I don't go where I can't take my survival pocket tools!

I don't like the idea of someone sitting looking at my bits and very weird shaped body lol!

wow! there will be no privacy in the future..!

Great idea

Concerned1 above, is worried about her daughter, why?You will not be able to see the man/lady behind the monitor, neither will he/she see you. So why would you care what they see? If you act calmly, your children will be calm. It's not that you see yourself naked while being scanned. As for somebody seeing me naked, who cares. Poor man/lady is going to be sick and tired staring at naked bodies after the second hour in any case! At least I would feel safer, knowing that it has been made more difficult for those whith devious plans to ruin my flight!
