NASA's Morpheus Lander Explodes During Test

At NASA's Kennedy Space Center, a free-flight test of the Morpheus lander proved disastrous on August 9, 2012. Having survived a tethered test flight on August 3, the Morpheus lander crashed in the first few seconds of an August 9 untethered test flight, and then exploded. You can see video footage of the Morpheus lander crash below.

According to NASA spokesperson Laura Lichtenberger, the Morpheus lander " lifted off the ground and then experienced a hardware component failure, which prevented it from maintaining stable flight. No one was injured, and the resulting fire was extinguished by KSC fire personnel."
