The long awaited Nintendo DSi is set to launch in America on April 5. The price is an estimated $170, with plenty of upgrades from the original DS. It now has two cameras and a SD card slot to upload photos, music, and downloadable games. The cameras are located on the outer shell as well as in the hinge. The cameras are .3 megapixels and the screen has been enlarged by 17%.

Nintendo did not say which of the downloadable games currently available in Japan would come to America. But on a recent visit to the Wired.com office, Nintendo reps brought along three games to demonstrate the service: Decode, a puzzle game, Bird and Bean, an inexpensive mini-game, and the new camera-controlled Wario game.

The relase of the DSi is to compete with the iPhone rather than the PSP as the new DSi allows the user to play their own music while playing games as well as the ability to take pictures.

The upgraded DSi is as much a response to the Apple iPhone as it is a jab at second-place Sony, whose PlayStation Portable has sold more than 40 million units. The DSi launched in Japan in the fall and was a hot seller there.

The new one is thinner, it has a wider screen, and the camera makes it all the more interesting.
