Nike's Trash Talk Shoe that was debuted by Steve Nash at the 2008 National Basketball Association All-Star Game, has also won a 2009 Design Award.

The shoe is made from manufacturing waste, such as leather and foam, all combined in to a new shoe that aims to use all aspects of manufacture material.

The idea came around after a Nike designer saw so much manufacturing waste outside a Nike factory near Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. Ten years ago, this idea would not have been entertained, but today is different.

Since then, Nike has halved its waste output and recycles two-thirds of its scrap, says spokeswoman Kate Meyers. But top management wanted to do better. Under a 2008 effort dubbed Considered Design, the sports apparel and equipment company aims to reduce waste throughout its supply chain by 17 percent and increase use of environmentally preferred materials by 20 percent by 2020.
