The Internet Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize 2010

The internet has been nominated for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. In 2010, a total of 237 individuals and organizations have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, breaking last year's record of 205 nominations.

The internet's nomination for Nobel Peace Prize was supported by Shirin Ebadi, who won the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, and Nicholas Negroponte, who found the $100 laptop project. The nomination has been promoted by the Italian version of Wired for the advancement of "dialogue, debate and consensus".

Geir Lundestad of the Nobel Institute said thousands of nominations were made every year. However, the Nobel Institute does not release the list of nominees until 50 years later.

In 2009, President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, but some disagree with the decision.

Organizations, not just individuals, have won the Nobel Peace Prize. For example, in 2007, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore. In 2005, it was awarded to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Mohamed ElBaradei.

Nominations can be put forward by former laureates, members of national governments and select university professors, among others.
