As we move in to 2010, the NORAD Santa Tracker 2009 is once again activated and is back to track Santa across the world on Christmas Eve and kids and adults alike can have fun finding out just where Santa is in the world dropping off presents to all the good boys and girls.

The NORAD Santa website has a 2009 countdown clock until Santa's flight begins in multiple languages, and according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) they start to track Santa and his reindeer including Rudolph as soon as they take off from the North Pole.

The NORAD Santa Tracker 2009 - 2010 team uses:

four high-tech systems to track Santa – radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets.

Rudolph's nose also helps to track Santa as it gives off a bright infrared signature, that the satellites can pick up easily.

The Santa Cams are high-speed digital cameras positioned around the world and they capture images of Santa and his reindeer as they travel.

The fourth system is made up of fighter jets. Canadian NORAD fighter pilots flying the CF-18 intercept and welcome Santa to North America. In the United States, American NORAD fighter pilots in either the F-15 or the F-16 get the thrill of flying alongside Santa and his famous reindeer

NORAD has been tracking Santa for over 50 years so don't forget to use the NORAD Santa Tracker 2009 - 2010 on this Christmas Eve.

Before the modern NORAD system, we had the DEW(Distant Early Warning) Line in Canada's North. Sometimes we would worry that they might mistake Santa's Sleigh for an ICBM but that never happened. It must have been the distinctive red nose on Rulolph.

We watched Santa (no kidding!!) for 8 full hours tonight on the tracker. It was addicting!! And so fun as well as a history lesson. Always wondered what his route was. Made sense. It's 6am and I now get 4 hours of sleep at most....exhuasted but that was very cool!! Whether you believer or not, you can't help being interested in seeing actual satellite imagery from all over the world, town, countries, learning time zones. We are both grown ups but had a ball. Will do it next year but now that we know it doesn't end with a hug from Mrs. Claus or even seeing him land, we definately won't stay up for far too long journey from Alaska to Hawaii and back to the North Pole. You can skip that part and get some shut eye. Merry Christmas!
