NowPublic Acquired by Examiner.com
Hi,
As you may have seen in the news, NowPublic has been acquired by Examiner.com. This is great news for the company, our readers and all of our contributors. Some of you may know Examiner.com but if you don’t already you’ll be seeing more of them soon.
Like NowPublic, they are re-writing the rules about how news gets made. They’ve got thousands of Examiners in cities across the US writing and reporting on everything from nightlife, sports and business to technology news and education issues. This means that there will be some great opportunities for all NowPublicans to get news out to an even larger audience. Stay tuned for details on how to get involved.
I’ve included the official release below. Check it out, let us know what you think in the comments here and thanks for all your ongoing support!
Michael, NowPublic.
Examiner.com Acquires NowPublic;
Merges Examiner.com’s Breadth of Content with NowPublic’s Technology to Deliver Unparalleled Hyperlocal Offering
DENVER, Colo., Sept. 2, 2009 – Examiner.com (www.examiner.com), the insider source for everything local, has acquired Vancouver-based NowPublic (www.nowpublic.com), a pioneer in user-generated content and the largest participatory news network in the world.
Examiner.com, whose audience has grown more than 200 percent since the beginning of the year and now has more than 15,000 Examiners (Examiner.com’s expert writers) in 109 U.S. cities, is the industry leader in creating local content, and will leverage NowPublic’s innovative search and publishing technology to solidify its leadership position in providing local news and information, delivering on the long-held promise of relevant, robust hyperlocal content to both consumers and advertisers.
“Every day we hear discussions about whether hyperlocal content will ever be scalable, sustainable or profitable as a business entity,” said Rick Blair, CEO of Examiner.com. “Examiner.com is rapidly becoming the solution to the hyperlocal puzzle. In the last year we have created the depth of content consumers and advertisers expect. With the acquisition of NowPublic, we have the technology to further engage our community of over 17 million unique visitors per month and distribute our stories in new and innovative ways.”
Among the technologies Examiner.com will adopt from NowPublic are its Emmy nominated real-time mechanism for scanning online conversations, world-class open source technology Drupal, and an enhanced publishing platform for Examiner.com contributors, who are projected to grow to over 30,000 by the end of the year.
“The NowPublic focus has always been on providing individuals, whether they are amateurs or professional journalists, the tools they need to quickly and easily contribute their perspectives on the issues of the day and the topics that interest them and their community,” said Leonard Brody, CEO and co-founder of NowPublic. “By combining our tools and audience with Examiner.com’s established, vetted, local content-generators, we are enabling Examiner.com, which has already seen incredible success, to further succeed in providing a site that attracts experts as contributors, passionate readers and the advertisers that want to reach them.”
In addition to the integration of NowPublic’s technology, Examiner.com will also actively recruit new Examiners from NowPublic, focusing specifically on NowPublic’s “professional amateur” contributors as well as its bevy of international writers, including its strong Canadian presence. NowPublic will also serve as a testing ground for new Examiner.com programs and ideas.
Examiner.com and NowPublic will operate independently, retaining their unique offerings and brands. NowPublic executives Leonard Brody, Michael Tippett and Michael Meyers will become key members of the executive management team of Clarity Digital Group, LLC, Examiner.com’s parent company.

I write for the examiner. That is great news that examiner.com will be getting a technology upgrade to a drupal platform. I LOVE drupal, my own Las Vegas real estate site runs on it.

Thanks for this news. How will it affect the way this site operates in the future? Will there be changes and how does it affect NowPublic members? Will there be a change in NowPublic Staff Structure?

For the moment things will carry on as usual but over time we're planning on opening up opportunities for NowPublic members to get involved at Examiner.com and conversely having Examiner content available for NowPublic readers and contributors. As for staffing our plan is to keep and expand the Vancouver team so all of our great editorial people will still be here to help you when you need it.

Examiner.com is limited to the USA and Canada, where as nowpublic.com is international, examiner.com pays its writers and nowpublic.com does not of which makes it a better platform for real citizen journalist of whom really do not wish to be paid for their input. However its more of a news gathering service, of which I have succumb to to obtain readership and but my real love for citizen journalism on the back burner.
I wonder if Nowpublic is going to change into a international version of Examiner.com of which seemingly also limits its writers to subjects and not across the board journalism. I want to be able to write about anything from religion to art etc. Even though your not the citizen journalistic platform I dream of please do not change into an internation version of Examiner as that would put limits on a status quo I have began to like. I really do not want to be paid for my input and I want to be able to write about every subject under the sun.

Why don't you want to be paid for your writing?
at 16:53 on September 1st, 2009
What does that imply for NP members?
Are we less of an international News medium now or more?
Will the name change?
Who will call the shots now?
Many more questions come to mind...

Paschen, has anyone set up a forum on this matter?
at 02:23 on September 2nd, 2009
If there is no forum, there's always a Facebook Group.

Sara has started a forum post with her feelings about this. You can take a look and comment there as well. See link below.

Michael, thank you for this assurance and will trust that our participation over these last years will be rewarded in the transition. I have learned a bunch along the way ... good on you all!
Also, I will be attending Blogworld & New Media Expo in Las Vegas, October 15-17, 2009 ... is there anyone from Examiner.com expected to be there? I would like to meet up with someone from the organization if they plan to attend.

ROFLMAO...you *still* don't get it, do you...Examiner.com bought you, you will be "calling the shots" for as long as they feel like letting you....
what part of "it's over" (once Examiner.com's check clears the bank) don't you understand?
at 17:44 on September 1st, 2009
Congratulations to Michael et al
at 23:56 on September 2nd, 2009
uh, "congratulations" NowPublic was faced with a simple choice: sell out (for a low price, $20M) or go bankrupt (and get $0).
break open the champagne ;)

I have mixed feelings.
I congratulate the owners of NP - nice pay out
I, however, do not think much of Examiner. They are a little exploitative, they set up all these "writers" with expectations and a promise of a peppercorn pay source, and throw anything up on their site based on the probability that one of oodles will stick.
Also I agree with Babel - Examiner is so tiny in focus not only local, but sub-city and even down another level to sub-discipline. If you want to know what goes on in a a council chamber in a tiny little hamlet, that is Examiner. NP has had a broader, more international and eclectic feel - Examiner is more Walmart
However, my biggest dislike is that Examiner will now be on here data-mining for stories they can sell, writers they can "entice" and having paid out $25 M, trying to find a way to make money off the site. Plus you are going to get an influx of Examiner local writers looking to cross-promote their work - sheesh
Hey, it's capitalism at work, I guess, but a Mini-Murdoch is now on here trying to make a buck, and we know how that goes. It is Mini MSM, and a lot of us were here because we were a little tired of MSM

Oh' for a citizen journalist community site that does not want to make money just do the world a service. But unfortunately the internet is geared at making money and using people just to do that.
Not so long ago a news community site I really liked was bought out and later the politics caused me and them to clash as one of my articles that controvened the new owners political view was frozen. My freedom of speech had been culled. Now we see nowpublic the second best news community being taken over by a company that is investing to making money.
Seeing I am getting the vibes that nonpublic.com had been struggling at a guess I would say Examiner.com will be looking at ways to make money and that could and most probably will cause a problem to some members in the near or far future in one way and another. Time will tell and we shall see. Hopefully I am very wrong.
At a guess this article was geared as register of what members would think of this takeover and we should hold no bars on our thoughts on this issue.
I do not think Examiner.com will be data-mining but they may bring changes that will be aimed at making money and make what they think will be a more attractive nowpublic.com. I expect there will be an advert sharing thing with rewards to members through paypal etc the path other news collecting communities have taken.
However at this point i would like to thank the administration at the old Nowpublic.com for providing a good service to all those buds that love using this site. Yes we have had problems, software glitches and so forth but its all worked at the end of the day. Well done, and those that have been rewarded, spend the money well as you have earnt it.
Life goes on...

I do not think Examiner.com will be data-mining
I think the phrase they used in the press release "...actively recruiting writers from."
