Obama: delay on stimulus is "inexcusable and irresponsible"
"These Americans are counting on us," he said. "All of us in Washington must remember that we're here to work for the American people. And if we drag our feet and fail to act, this crisis will turn into a catastrophe. We'll continue to get devastating job reports like today's - month after month, year after year."
Despite strong attempts at bipartisanship, Obama is making some of his most pointed remarks to date, as he criticized the Senate for failing to pass a now long-awaited economic stimulus package. He called the failure "inexcusable and irresponsible."
He proclaimed that it could take "months - even years" to put the economy back on track, but pointed out that the timeline continued to become longer as the stalemate persists.
After almost 600,000 jobs cuts, and with 47 million people without health insurance, the US is fast slipping further into its worst economic crisis to date.
Increasing the national debt has been a major deterrent in passing the $900 billion legislation, which will put the country that much further into debt.
However, it is worth noting that, following World War II, the US had its highest national debt to date. Between 1940 and 1945, it spiked from $43 billion to $259 billion. World War II was followed by a decade of prosperity which created a previously non-existent middle class.
For now, there is no telling exactly where this round of debt will lead the country, but one thing is clear - quick action is required, and Obama has no problem demanding it.

Definitely true that we have some serious econonomic problems, but solve those problems by letting an avid partisan Nancy Pelosi, Craft an "economic" package that will minimally turn the situation around because it does not adress the issues of jobs, foreclosures or tax cuts, which will put actual monies in the hands of tax payers.
Unless there is a massive overhaul of the package and time for cooler, knowledgible heads to draft an appropriate package, we will fall further down the slippery slope rather than climb out.

"inexcusable and irresponsible"? It is the most responsible thing they could do. The really irresponsible thing is throwing a trillion dollars at a problem using a shotgun approach and hoping for a sniper shot!.

"Quick action" does not mean in unreasoned haste. Impugning the motives of those who disagree, which is all I heard this morning from an economist who works for Obama, is just wrong.
The "culo", to use the Italian term, that gets saved by going more slowly may turn out to be Obama's.

Marisa, the Senate is reaching some form of compromise on the $780 billion stimulus package as of this note.

And Feinstein wasn't happy with the bill, either, as it was.
