President elect Obama faces huge problems as soon as he takes office; at home and world wide. He is no doubt intelligent and talented byt still this mess wlll take years to correct.

President-elect Barack Obama, relatively young and inexperienced, is facing a rapidly growing list of monumental challenges as he prepares to take the reins of a nation in turmoil.

"I do not underestimate the enormity of the task that lies ahead," Obama said after his historic election a little more than a month ago.

It was a sobering assessment at the time, but the country's problems have only worsened since then. Now, Obama sounds dire, particularly as he talks about the economy: "We're in an emergency."

He spoke during a week in which Congress killed a bailout of the failing auto industry, the government reported that jobless claims spiked to their highest levels in more than a quarter-century, and the Treasury Department said the nation registered a record federal budget deficit for November.

Good reading.  I felt strongly before the election that President-elect Obama would win the presidency.  Not much has changed since I was a child, unfortunately.  We used to get school books after the Caucasian students had already used them for several years and they were worn out and ragged.  When we were assigned our "new" books at the beginning of the school year, we had to take them home and tape the binders back together and tape the torn pages.  Some of our parents invested in bright bookcovers that really held the school books together well and made them look almost new - on the outside.

Maybe in the next four to eight years, President-elect Obama's administration can repair some of the tremendous damage that has been done to our country's economy since the last time we had a Democrat in the White House.

Obama has a great opportunity.  Let's hope he will take full advantage of it.
