As researchers for The Free Enterprise Nation began compiling information about the pay and benefits disparity that exists between government/public education and those who work in the private sector, we'd hear an occasional "OH, MY GOSH!" or "OH, MY!" as they found another reference to shocking pay and benefits practices in the public sector. It might have been the first time they saw a State of California pensioner retiring at $500,000 a year...or perhaps the Illinois driver's training teacher earning $170,000 a year and retiring at $130,000 a year...or perhaps the New York City workers who amass more than $100,000 in overtime in their last year before retirement, triggering a pension benefit in excess of their salary.

I was very happy to see your full page introduction in the WSJournal.I am a former private sector worker, now retired and disgusted. When are private sector people going to wake up and realize the they are paying taxes to provide defined benefit retirement plans for public sector workers that they themselves do not have. The public sector workers also have health insurance and other benefits which are superior to private sector. And I am tired of hearing how underpaid school teachers are because they are not.School teachers are part time workers--they always try to compare their salaries by using an annual figure.Teachers work about 1600 hours a year while the people they try to use as comparisons work 2080 hours a year.If you use an hourly figure for comparison then the teachers pay fares very well. But do not allow them to compare themselves with Doctors,Lawyers,Dentists and Engineers. Those are apples and oranges. The big problem in public sector is that the po;liticians and unions are in bed together.Union representation in public sector is over 30% while it is about 7.5% in pvt sector.Private sector keeps unions out while government accomodates them and gives the store away. And the Teachers unions are the biggest impediment to improving our schools which are a disgrace.BILL ALLEN--HOMOSASSA-Florida
