Opinion: Facebook's Redesign Failure
Transcript of the podcast:
Hello this is bloggi signing on from the west German city of Düsseldorf.
Today I would like to talk to you about the re design of Facebook.
To cut a long story short: It is the worst heap of crap metal I have seen in a long time in terms of usability and accessibility.
While all the world goes mobile FACEBOOK ties ball and chains around the ankles of its users.
As of today, the mobile version of facebook at m.facebook.com is no longer available. Instead the browser is forced to whatever national language version there is of the non mobile website. Hard luck, if you are traveling abroad with a slim device.
Even to send Facebook feedback on their failure, you need to run a browser that incorporates Flash. Otherwise, the feedback window will not open.
What, if you are on a mobile device or simply don't go for making easy things unnecesarily complex? Well, then Facebook is not for you any longer.
Finally, have you tried to upload photos to Facebook from where it is the most interesting? Well.
Out of luck again, if you try it from a mobile.
Unless, that is, you are prepared to pay the ransom fees of using multimedia messaging. No mobile e-mail address available like with sensible services to the tunes of Utterz.com or Brightkite.
Conclusion: Eventually Facebook will fade away. Hopefully.

So if you're roaming from Germany to Netherlands, your Facebook page will appear in Dutch? I'm not so sure that's such a great feature, especially considering just how close Euro-nations are to one another...

Isn't the new design still in its early stages though? A few cockups and design flaws can be forgiven!

Not really. Facebook Mobile is still available, and using Facebook from Germany in German is perfectly possible. I uploaded a photo from my mobile phone on tuesday and it worked just fine using Facebook's iPhone app.

Great opinion piece - I agree with you for the most part!

i think you need to research your story more my friend, half the thing you are saying are wrong..
You now have 3 facebook mobile: Old, new and Iphone ap (which is a great add on and allow you to use the facebook chat..)
You can also opt to use the old facebook if you're not happy with the new style.
Language is a user selected feature.. I am in china and facebook is still in English, French or whatever language i would want it to be.
Last the new facebook allow you to control your feed, and various other items..
IMO you have an issue with facebook and need to get over it if you want to write a piece that accuratly reflect the new changes.. All i see in this article is a piece that has been poorly researched and badly edited..
Sorry for thrashing you, but I disagree, Facebook rocks in my opinion!

Hey Markus Schlegel I found some things that didn't pass my sniff test. Could it be... fishy??? You might want to fix some stuff up or else it's headed to the bottom of our bird cage. Want me to get particular? OK, I got a whiff that this story may not actually be true. That image you added: did you really take it yourself? This story may be a hoax, for all I know -- or maybe you think you're auditioning for a job at The Onion Or maybe you're gunning for our Catch of the Day award???

Hello folks,
actually I tried everything first hand on my HTC phone. In my opinion, however, it cannot be my job as a user to try again, and again, and again.
Facebook is most certainly on the wrong path with its new version, and old versions eventually will always go after a while.
Given the kind of investment capital they have in their back, this is not a garage venue, and engineering can be expected to live up to state of the art. As for iPhone versions, please see one of my earlier posts.

Robert: I think you do not understand the concept of fishy tags very well. We may disagree, but how can a piece marked opinion be fishy, if it is not pejorative or offensive?
I think it is very important to be tolerant in the discussion amongst us, something which should not be sacrificed easily.
I am a bit sad that you seem to have a hard time keeping apart evangelism for a product and the according enthusiasm and the right of people like me not to share in that.
Nevertheless I see no reason to be punished. Please do remove the fishy flag.
