The "Other White Meat" Of The Auto-Fuel World

That's right, there is another fuel alternative that would allow all of us to become less dependent on foreign sources for fuel in our automobiles and this one gets very little respect.

Just as in Pork having to advertise that it is the other white meat in order to get attention … Natural Gas should launch a similar campaign.

Almost everyone is aware of E85 Ethanol as THE fuel alternative of the future, but Natural Gas should also be considered into the calculation. It's cheap, it's plentiful, it's produced locally, and the infrastructure is almost all in place for those who do not mind a little planning.

For example, only three E85 re-fueling stations exist in California (and only one of those is available to the general public) whereas there are over 200 Natural Gas stations open for general public use with another 50 under construction.

And now, with "Phill" in you garage, you will have a Natural Gas station to get any trip started.

Natural-gas powered cars: Who even knows they exist?

Edmund,

You have made an excellent point here. I think the big push is on ethanol because it lulls us into the feeling that something is being done about alternative fuels, while keeping oil consumption steady because of the enormous amount energy need to produce it.

That, said, I am not sure how much of this is your own take on the subject or, is it completely gleaned from a another story? I would like to see some type of cost analysis between ethanol, gasoline, and natural gas.

It would be interesting to see some hard reporting about how rare natural gas is, what kind of supply the earth has, how costly it is to get, what by-products are pumped out when it is consumed, etc.

Ultimately ALL of these "fuel alternatives" are just ways of swapping one dependency for another, and keeping people reliant on a fuel substance which can be dispensed in limited quantities from modified existing gas stations, with prices controlled by big corporations and profits lining the same -- or similar -- pockets.

I hope we'll eventually stop trying to trick people into inferior options in order to sustain the business model that's built around the idea of consuming a dispensible fuel that's in limited supply and with fixed prices.

Electric cars are already viable. Look into some of the latest prototypes, and even the latest production models. We can run electric cars from energy generated by natural forces like tides, wind and geothermal energy. End the rigged system of dispensible, limited fuels and go truly environmentally-friendly.

... as if!

Batteries are anything BUT green.

At the moment, there is plenty of Natural Gas ... and yes, we do need to keep looking for the best mix.
