Pi Day: Sunday March 14 2010, Math Enthusiasts Around the World Celebrate

Pi Day (π) is celebrated around the world by math enthusiasts on March 14 2010 and there are a number of ways to be involved in the celebrations.

Pi Minute is sometimes observed on Pi Day as well, so this would be March 14 at 1:59pm. The Pi Second happens at 1:59:26pm as if π is truncated to seven decimal places it would be 3.1415926, so that would be March 14 at 1:59pm and 26 seconds.

Pi is described as a 'mathematical constant'

whose value is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter in Euclidean space

Using computers, Pi has been calculated to one trillion numbers past the decimal point, but it is approximately equal to 3.141593. As it is an irrational number it will continue as an infinite number and will not repeat.

According to the Pi Day website, in 1706 William Jones first used the symbol for Pi (π) but Leonhard Euler made the symbol popular in 1737.

The San Francisco Exploratorium was the first to celebrate Pi Day in 1988 and this year they have scheduled a list of events for this year as well.

There will be many people celebrating Pi Day all over the world with get-togethers and parties with different kinds of food and discussion groups.

Pi Approximation Day is also celebrated on July 22, but March 14 is the most popular day to celebrate Pi and it will be a whole day of celebration.
