Ping! iPhone App: Blackberry Ain't Got Nothin' on Apple Anymore
Sorry Research In Motion, but the Blackberry ain't got nothin' on the Apple iPhone anymore. Ping!, a new app available for the iPhone is the equivalent to the much-loved Blackberry Messenger (BBM). Made by the guy behind PushGmail, Ping! is a fast and free SMS like service that notifies the user of incoming messages even when his or her iPhone is inactive.
What is Ping!
Ping! is iphone-to-iphone messaging that also works with the iPod Touch. Ping! works with push notifications so that messages can be delivered ANYWHERE in the world, instantly. The experience is simple and familiar (resembles SMS!) but does not incur additional carrier charges, like text messaging would.
Ping! is like Blackberry Messenger/BBM!
Ping! is similar to BBM in that you can message other iPhones and iPod Touches quickly and easily without text messaging costs. Ping! is intended for your friends and works only when you have your friend's Ping! ID to start messaging.
All you have to do is download the, currently free, application, create a Ping! ID, add your friends, and you're all set for free iPhone-to-iPhone messaging.
So head over to the iPhone App Store and download away before the free promotional offer expires!

Does Ping! not work on non-3G iphones? I download the app and when I touch it to open it just says "Connecting. Please Wait" but never connects even if I have perfect WiFi connection.

lol so you mean just coz the iphone is starting to catch up to BB in the usefulness factor (something the iphone has been devoid of) that makes the BB redundant? how so? as far as i can recall, you'll always be hindered by that stupid touchscreen! i'll be honest, if iphone got rid of the touchscreen or at least bought out a version with keys, it would be an option, but until then it is still the worlds most annoying gadget.

Yeah I thought that too until I actually tried one for awhile, and now I love the touch screen. Typing is actually easier than on a tiny keyboard (surprising, but after a couple days practice I'm a bit faster on the iPhone than my BB), and faster. And launching apps, web browsing, and 100 other things are much, much easier.

each to their own. but i hate buttons and the tap sounds they make when typing. i'm a part time ninja and i like to be silent when im tapping away especially in lecture halls or meetings. touch screen doesnt tap. iPhone wins.

DEEEEJ,As a business device no one will argue that an iphone is superior. The large touch screen is part of what enables the iPhone to be such a dynamic consumer entertainment device, as well as an excellent mode of communication. Removing the large touch screen would significantly damage the iPhone's intergrity in its demographic, and put it in direct competition with an item that is superior in that sense. The iPhone offers a compromise: a fun friendly exciting interface, with plenty of add-ons and options, as well as a decent communication and business platform. The Blackberry offers the same features with different priorities: a revolutionary business device with more limited entertainment options. The blackberry has commanded its market - clearly we can see that other QWERTY phones have not been up to snub, and the iPhone continues to dominate palm, HTC, LG and other competitors. You can go ahead and call it the world's most annoying gadget; nonetheless, it commands non-business wireless devices, wireless entertainment, as well as a good portion of wireless phones as a whole. In terms of annoying, I prefer people who want to show me annoying new apps to douchebags using BBM while they talk to you.One is not better thant he other. I however, am better than you.

I have the 3gs and my husband and two friends just have the 3g. I can send messages to them and they get them, but when they send messages to me, I can't get them. It works between them. I gave turned my phone off and then back on and nothing. I also tried to uninstall and then reinstall and nothing. Does anyone have any idea why I can't get it to work??

If your iPhone is jailbroken it won't work, to fix it do this:1. uninstall ping!2. add source cydia.iphoneil.net to cydia3. search for “push” in cydia and install “Push Fix” . Did and did not reboot the device.4. install ping! again.5. reboot device (iphone v 3.0).happy pinging!

LOVE ping! one thing i dont like tho. how there is no confirmation when you clear your chat messages. like i ALWAYS accidentally tap the 'clear' button when i was really aiming for the 'contact info' have the verification option when trying to clear chats. update needed fast. now go save lives.

For people with "Connecting...Please Wait" problem unsolved, try this:Go to "Settings" of iPhone, you should see an item called "Notifications" (probably the fourth one from top), this has to be "on"; you will further see "Ping!" listed under Notifications page, it has 3 options to be set on or off, at least have the "alerts" on.That's all, no need to turn the phone off and on, and it's nothing to do with jailbreaking too

Whenever I send a ping to someone, they say they didn't get a ping. I only get one ping when I turn off the phone then turn it back on. What's wrong with my ping? because I'm startting to lose hope for ping. ):
