After meeting with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in Stockholm, the Pirate Party announced the move, which it said was part of its political mandate.

Speaking to TorrentFreak, Piratparteit leader Rick Falkvinge said, "I love opportunities to demonstrate that one of the biggest differences between us and the other parties is that we positively leap at any and all changes to take real responsibility for changing the world, rather than just commission reports and avoiding blame like the archetypal politician".

The Pirate Party, which campaigns for extended online freedom and copyright reform, won 7.1% of the popular vote in Sweden's 2009 elections.

"We welcome the help provided by the Pirate Party," Assange was quoted as saying in the statement. "Our organisations share many values and I am looking forward to future ways we can help each other improve the world."
