Update on April 23:
According to the Playstation blog, the issue has still not been fixed, and the reason the fix is taking so long is that they are rebuilding the system.
We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.
They have still not provided a timeline for the network to be back up and running.
Update on April 22:
Playstation confirmed that the network went down on April 20, and they still have not released a time for it to come back on Saturday April 23.
On April 22, the following message was posted on their blog:
An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.
There is still no confirmed time for the Playstation Network to come back online.

The Playstation network is experiencing problems and users may not have everything up and running for at least a few more days.
According to the Playstation blog:
While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running. Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter. Please stay tuned to this space for more details, and we’ll update you again as soon as we can.
Previously, Euope's Playstation blog had said they were looking into a possible attack from an outside party, however that message no longer exists, and the network is still down.
Users are angry about the outage, especially the amount of time it may take to get everything up and running again.
Mortal Kombat, along with a few other games, were just released and users can't play them online.
Playstation has not provided any more information about the network problems at this time.

I'm angry yet fine with this...It could be time for us gamers to go outside or something, I myself could not for it was raining to hard...and for the gamers out there...there is something called.."Single player Mode" or "Story Mode".

But don't you have to pay for your internet service each month? I like having free internet usage on my PS3 and this is the only problem I have ever had with it. Even with this problem I still choose the PS3 over the XBOX360 =D

This is all a source of playstation bragging to the community to start with that no one could hack it. Now that the playstation has been out for a few years, everyone has learned everything that they need to about the games. I also hope that they will take a day or two extra (if necessary) to fix all of the hacking within the games online. I know black ops hackers are pretty apparent online... So thank you PSN for taking the time to fix the problems. Take as much time as you need to make it a fun and secure environment for us all.

I run my whole recording studio off of 4 PS3 systems. It Only Does Everything, man. fuck the shitbox360. can I run my studio off of 4 xbox360s? No i cant...... Can i even watch blu rays with my assbox306!? nope..... I will always have the best bluray player on the market because PS3 can download firmware updates for it. i got my ps3 in like 2009, and i can still watch 3D blurays with it. so suck my d. xbox is whack.

for all you people saying play single player mode or story mode I only play DC Universe Online. I can not play single player and I pay for this every month so not only is this a conveniece I'm losing out on money.
