Suddenly, just as it seemed that the false alarm could not possibly become more false - it did! Those of us in assemblage there in the lobby that day cast our eyes about as if to ask, 'Who might come along and assist these brave, futile firefighters as they face this false alarm?'
When suddenly, as if in answer to our unspoken pleas, the mail truck arrived and took its place at the curb behind a firetruck.
The firefighters, obviously much relieved in the presence of the confident aura of an employee of the Canadian Postal Service, were then able to silence the alarm, restore elevator service and slip away in their now silenced trucks.
Oh, and I suppose we got some mail, too.
