A while ago, I found a tool called Power Defragmenter and Contig. Asthe name suggested, the program claims to take defragmentation processto a whole new level. It is a simple program with simple userinterface. You can choose to defrag a file, a folder, a disk or thePowerMode which is an enhanced Dual Pass defragmentation method formaximal defragmentation level.

VistaRewired claimed that defragmentation process was gradually reduced to 6 minutes from 82 minutes on Vista machine.

Ithen decided to test it on Mee’s laptop. At that time, I had justfinished formatted the hard drive and Windows Tiny Edition wasinstalled. However, the defragmentation took almost half an hour to onehour. In my opinion, a newly formatted hard drive with just installedWindows shouldn’t take that long even with the built-in defragmenter.

Notsatisfied, I installed Firefox 2 and copied a few portable programsinto the root drive. I rebooted the system and ran Power Defragmenteragain. However, it took almost the same duration as the first try.

Eventhough it’s free, but I reckoned that it may not work as good as thebuilt-in defragmenter. As with other users who claimed that it improvesthe system performance substantially, I would only say that I don’tagree at all.

– Power Defragmenter –

I have heard comments on Vistasaying that the system will crash if defragmentation is not ranperiodically. However, I have my Vista for about 6 months without anydefragmentation until two weeks ago. So far, I did not experience anyproblems except blue screen and memory dump. It was caused by theoverclock of memory module which I set it from the motherboard. However, I changed it to the original settings, and everything becamenormal afterwards.

Two weeks ago, I ran Vista defragmenter andit was completed below 60 minutes. I believe the time frame isacceptable and I will run it again since I have installed Service Pack1 recently.
