Ad Age has assembled an insightful and humorous list of things that keep afloat during bad times.  Their list includes some surprises.

More layoffs and fewer bonuses lead to greater stress. And more stress leads to ... mouthguard sales? Indeed, according to anecdotal reports. Pink-slipped Wall Streeters have been flocking to the dentist to seek reprieve from their nightly stress-induced teeth grinding, which can damage teeth and lead to jaw trouble. Of course, custom-fitted mouthguards are hardly recession-priced -- they run between $300 and $700.

In the story of stuff a woman explains that in actuality many people pay for the low cost if items. The production cuts corners that leads to environmental decay, poor wages, and so on.

I cringe to see wal-mart promoted ever.

And as Savitri D. posted in her most recent blog on revbilly.com what we dont realize is that when things take a turn for the worst, she says, the world feels our pain...because many of them are living that way all of the time. This is a time to realize how we participate in that cycle. And  to evolve.

It is interesting that nobody is pointing out that there is an upside to Chrysler shutting down for a month, tar sands projects being put on hold and Italian energy consumption down 30%.   While this hurts all the people who work at these companies but we should all consider the impact of drop in carbon levels, the resources saved and the ecological benefit to this slowdown.
