Valve Software, the game maker responsible for Half Life and the stream of spiritual successors such as Half Life 2 and Portal, and the Steam distribution system seems to be in the sights of Google's acquisition centre. The Inquirer reported earlier today, with much certainty, that "Google is going to buy [them]."

WELL PLACED SOURCES tell us that Google is going to be buying Valve any second now. If you have to stop and think about why, you probably are not aware of Steam, Valve's amazing content distribution platform.

However, this is the Internet and Valve responded: "complete fabrication."

I contacted Valve pr man Doug Lombardi who replied to my request for comment on this news with just two words: “complete fabrication.”

Just to make sure Lombardi wasn’t being cagey, I asked if it’s be correct if we posted that (my words) “Valve says Google isn’t buying the company.” He said that would be correct. So… no sale!

If you watch the web, it's interesting to see the number of news sources who snapped up the story and rationalized the acquisition's value to Google. It does seem like a match made in the heavens, though… Steam is definitely a great, time tested method of distributing the content that Google is starting to get into: Chrome, Gears, and Android.
