REPOSSESSION BY THE LOWEST BIDDER?

"A Vehicle Repossession turned ugly.  Now a Repoman and his wife are on the run and wanted for the murder of an Augusta GA man. NBC Augusta 26 News spoke with the man whose car ws being repossessed and watched his best friend of 20 years fight for his life."

Having been in the repossession business for more than 20 years, this terrible and needless death can only be chalked up to Finance Company bean counters recommending that financial institutions hire the cheapest rather than the most professional repossession companies to perform repossessions for them.

FOR THE 999TH TIME, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONALISM DOES NOT EMANATE FROM THE PERSON WHO SAYS THEY CAN DO A REPOSSESSION FOR THE CHEAPEST PRICE.  JUST THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE.

WHAT PRICE DO YOU PUT ON A MANS LIFE?

BUT FOR THE DARKEST, MOST NARCISSISTIC CORPORATE CURMUDGEON, "HOW MANY TIMES ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE TO SAVE $100.00 ON A REPO TO PAY FOR THIS MULTIMILLION DOLLAR LAWSUIT.

Professionalism and Training cost money.  Experience takes time.

My company's preferred approach for anything but known crack houses and criminals is to knock on the door and ask for the keys;

When met with resistance, my script for my agents goes along the lines of : "You signed a contract that said you promised to pay X number of payments for X number of months, and if you did not, your lender could have the vehicle back....  Is that correct?.....  So the only question is, are you a person of your word? "Yes or No""

I have the luxury of the success with that technique with the good people of Minnesota, Wisconsin and the upper Midwest..

In the case at hand, this was a voluntary repossession.  I can think of no explanation.  When you see someone in front of your truck or disappear under the front of your truck; "What reasonable non-impaired person does not stop?"  At my company, We don't even carry guns under my philosophy, "No Collateral worth shooting or being shot over"  I never thought i would have to modify that to say, "No Collateral worth running someone over for"

All of this merely to save a few dollars using presumably the cheapest and possibly the most unqualified repoman available.

Financial Institutions have a duty to "exercise due diligence" and other obligations delegated to them under the UCC are "non-delegatable duties" With this in mind, if you still want "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Behavior hire someone else; If you want professional, low drama results, call us.

EXCERPT FROM A COMMUNICATION FROM A REPOSSESSION ASSOCIATION I BELONG TO

"Be aware that a voluntary REPO by Renaissance/Renovo has led to murder in Augusta Georgia..This is the third incident and second death created by Renovo (not to mention the gun incident in Omaha) ..in 60 days.

Please advise all clients (that you know) that are using Renaissance/Renovo by forwarding emails and news articles. These clients need to be aware that cheap is NOT cheap. One man lost his life in Mississippi, one soldier got a gun pointed at him, and now an innocent third party visiting a friend has been murdered by a cheap price tag.

I am sure the lien holder will be paying about $XX Million (based on age charts) in regard for this Voluntary Repo.....

No response is necessary.

The crazy thing is that this supposedly was to be a “voluntary” (although we all know about those as well). We are assuming the repossession agency was Renaissance Recovery, although it could be a local Augusta firm using that same name. That, we don’t know as yet. We also have not seen who the creditor is....the entity that could ultimately be responsible for this. "

ALL CLIENTS AND REPOSSESSORS THAT WORKING WITH RENOVO  NEED TO QUIT USING THEM IMMEDIATELY FOR WORK.

THIS IS THE WORST REPOSSESSION COMPANY IN THE UNITED STATES, THEY ARE UNETHICAL AND ARE  REPOSSESSING COLLATERAL WITH LOWEST STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONALISM.

THE LEADERS OF THE THIS COMPANY ARE CREATING THE WORST REPOSSESSION NIGHTMARES IN THE INDUSTRY DUE TO THEIR CONTRACTING TACTICS AND SCHEMES---THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED NOW.

Hello John R

Correct me if i am wrong but Renovo is alleged to have 3 deaths in the last 3 years.  I have no deaths in 21 years come this August.

Hello April

Cheapest does not always mean the worst.

But the probability of getting the poorest with the cheapest is higher.

How do you explain these deaths with renovo and not everyone in the repo industry.

You took the time to write, and I thank you for that.

However, you are not the whole of renovo...

Don:

Your policy is to walk up to the door and ask for the keys? While I probably agree with some of the opinions in the article - there is absolutely no way to go along with your little script and notion that you should knock on the door for the keys. Countless repossessions go bad when an agent goes to the door for keys when they could either

A. make the key and drive the collateral away with no contact - or

B. tow it away with no contact.

Making contact on a repossession is unnecessarily inviting risk...sometimes you have to make contact - but if you don't have to you NEVER should. The repossessor has the element of surprise going for him as his biggest advantage. Once he knocks on the door and asks for the keys the element of surprise goes away. A very large percentage of debtors are not going to surrender the keys to the repossessor - no matter what script you've got for them. A great percentage will engage the repoman in a good old fashioned breach of peace headache. Then you get to call your client and explain how you could have repossessed their car but when you asked the debtor for the keys he:

A. put the car in the garage...

B. called the police - who came out and told you to take a hike...

C. got in the car and drove away from your agent with his hand extended for the keys...

D. got violent with your agent...

E. said he was going to file bankruptcy today, tomorrow, next week, etc...

F. said the payment is in the mail or he has payment arrangements and he isn't turning over the car...

G. says he needs the car for work or whatever and refuses to turn it over...

For all of the above scenarios and hundreds more a professional repossession agent should never go to the door and ask for the keys unless the car is not there after several attempts or if it's always in the garage. Sorry buddy - but after 21 years in the business you should know better!

Well Dave Sullivan -

First, this article is about a voluntary repossession that ended in murder.  How does the debtor or his friend get run over and killed on a voluntary repossession? If you did not catch that little detail, I understand how you lack the ability to underwrite and the finesse to talk someone out of their keys.

Second, regarding this thing called underwriting...  I don't ask for the keys at known crack houses and D Credit Debtors, for example... But then again, I generally turn away subprime work.

Third, I guess I let my success rate speak for itself.  Have their been a car or 2 per year that I did not get because i knocked on the door?  Yes. But How many lawsuits did I avoid? How much high drama did I avoid?  And in this market, plenty of good folks are down on their luck because they did not anticipate the economy going into the tank.  Nothing this severe had happened in a couple generations. Do they really need to be treated like D Credit People? Are you unable to adapt to the changing market?

Maybe you are dealing with a lot of subprime stuff that causes you to have to deal with a different class of people, but the prime credit persons I have dealt with have overwhelmingly surrendered the vehicle.

And you presume that all we repossesses are cars and trucks.  What do you do with boats, jet skis, snowmobiles etc. that are most often locked in a garage or up at the cabin. Do you turn to your lender and tell them you lack the skills to get the job done?

Please stop promoting your cowboy tactics as necessary. Please climb off your high horse and stop thumping your chest.  I do not have to humiliate people to make myself feel like more of a man.  Just because you lack the ability to underwrite and the finesse to talk people out of there keys, does not mean I do.

To me it is just business.  I don't have to project that larger than life, Cowboy attitude. And i don't do any drugs, let alone those that cause cowboy behavior. Crack Houses and D Credit - yep your strategy probably works.A and Prime Credit folks deserve to be treated with respect unless they have demonstrated otherwise. I find it very telling that you do not distinguish (underwrite) your accounts.  Your attitude is that you are better than anyone else. i don't share that particular outlook on life.

And lastly, I find it pretty Callus of you not to at least offer condolences to the family of the dead man.  Too bad your mother did not raise you better. You should have had those manners drilled into your head in the first 12 years of life. Shame on you.

But, I guess that goes with the Cowboy Attitude. (By the way, that Operation Repo stuff on TV is just like all star wrestling, scripted and choreographed for maximum titillation - its not real)

In closing, How about you do it your way, and I will do it my way? If your lack of mental ability and your cowboy attitude force you to snag and drag everything, so be it.  I still prefer finesse and underwriting'.

With due respect,

Don Mashak
