Row Over Calls For 'Super-Rich Tax'

Retail sales fell in August as the success of Team GB in the Olympics failed to have a positive impact on the high street.

George Osborne was booed yesterday by a 80,000 Paralympic crowd in response to his swinging cuts to disabled people's benefits.

Retail sales values were down by 0.4% on a like-for-like basis last month.

Apart from Easter it was the weakest month since last November, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said.

The sporting event gave a mild boost to food sales in the form of party food and drink, the BRC said, but the net effect of the Games was minimal as lower footfall in London hit sales.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, which represents some 60% of retailers, said: "It's clear people were absorbed by the magnificent Olympics and had little interest in shopping, especially for major items."

The research will fuel fears over Britain's economic recovery as the country struggles to emerge from the longest double-dip recession since the fifties.

George Osborne's economic policy of taking it away from those who need it and giving it away to those who already have far to much, is making it difficult and embarrassing for him to make any public appearances. Getting booed is a just a nice British way of saying, we've had enough of you!!!!!
