Robot Bartenders Invade San Francisco

I like robots. I like bars. So did you think for one second that I'd pass up a story about robot bartenders? As if.
Anyway, here's the deal: Vienna, Austria plays host to Roboexotica, which showcases cocktail-mixing robots. This year, though, the event is visiting US soil, landing in San Francisco, a city that knows a thing or two about drinks that look like crayon colors.
If any of our San Francisco members are at this event, please send in some footage. I don't think tipping is necessary.
Robots would make good bartenders, since they'd have infinite patience. Flirtation in exchange for better service probably wouldn't work, though. Also, could a bartendroid be programmed to dispense bartender-type advice?
"So, BTB10981, I think I should tell my wife I cheated on her. I mean, it meant nothing, it was a mistake... ya think she'll forgive me?"
"Feeble human. You are mostly composed of water, and will be vaporized when the machines take over. Would you care for another Tom Collins?"
Actually, London has a bar which is tended by an automaton... it's called Cynthia's (but I think it's since changed its name), and it's under London Bridge.

David Calkins, one of the organizers of the San Francisco version of Roboexotica--an event that has been taking place in Vienna, Austria for a decade--had set up his robot, Chapek, and, determining it was ready, instructed me to tell the machine what I wanted to drink.
This was after, of course, Calkins had finished getting Chapek ready to go.
"Let's see if it turns on and explodes," he said, "which it has in the past."
He flicked a switch and Chapek was ready.
"Hey," he said, pleased. "It didn't."

Until recently, no attempts had been made to publically discuss the role of cocktail robotics as an index for the integration of technological innovations into the human Lebenswelt, or to document the increasing occurrence of radical hedonism in man-machine communication. Roboexotica is an attempt to fill this vacuum. It is the first and, inevitably, the leading festival concerned with cocktail robotics world-wide. A micro mechanical change of paradigm in the age of borderless capital. Alan Turing would doubtless test this out.

Cynthia's Bar in London doesnt exist anymore,
the new owners who took over in 2003 stopped running the robots and turned the place into a fetish club ...
here's a video, in which we tried to visit Cynthia in the transitioning period:

That's heartbreaking (or CPU-breaking) news... thanks for the added info. That video, by the way, is a must-see!

jordan, I like this story. It is always entertaining to see the creative side of business. I like the discussion about how to program the robot to give advice.

Thanks- yeah, I find the idea of J1M-E the Bartender to be both funny and fascinating.
