Rockmelt: Download New Browser in Limited Beta
Rockmelt: Social Browser Enters Limited Beta
Rockmelt is the latest attempt at creating a social media browser, and is hoping to succeed where Flock failed. Rockmelt compiles often-used networks such as Facebook and Twitter into the borders of the browser window, enabling the user to hit all of his or her social networks without leaving the active tab.
Rockmelt is built on Chromium, the open-source platform behind Google Chrome. If you want to download Rockmelt and take it for a test drive, you have to connect via Facebook. This could be where Flock went wrong, in that Rockmelt is going for the hard social-sell. However, that could also turn users off. For example, I'm not going to screw around with a Facebook app this early in the morning, and I know how my friends feel about getting pinged whenever someone begins using a new application, i.e. not too good.
The larger uphill battle for Rockmelt, though, is proving that this solution is addressing an actual problem. Are bit.ly sidebar and Facebook Like buttons that hard to use?
Also, after watching the video, I call BS on the Tron Guy being the Toby's landlord.
