We have all seen the add "Is your computer running slow- even a brand new computer - click on our web site and we can scan it and tell you viruses found, extra programs that you do not need., etc., etc.        England has known about this company for over a year and has been working to shut them down - during that  time they started advertisements here in the US.   Yes, they woud scan your computer but a computer that had no virus would  suddenly come up with a ton of things wrong and you were asked to pay enormous fees to repair your computer.

The US government has moved to shut down sellers of fake security software.

UPDATE:  Scareware Co held in contempt of court.....

US District Judge Richard D. Bennett ruled that the Belize based company was in contempt for failing to comply with its "Stop its scareware campaign and turn over financial records".  They are to pay $8,000 per day.   This ruling came down after the CEO and 4 other xecutives did not appear in court on Dec. 24th.

HAHAHAHA...I always laughed at these ads!

But they had people with accents in them, so they must know what they are talking about!

Just saw an ad by one of these companies on VH1 about an hour ago.  They're still out there...

Scary thought isn't it - The US is trying to get  a federal court order to stop ads immediately as wel las get their assests completley frozen- plus with the holiday it may take a n extra week or so just to get in to court ( I think Federal Courts  are on Christmas Break till mid Jan).

GOOD!! Every time I turn around, I get the "Fake Security Alert" Trojan. "Super Anti-Spyware" ( a feeware download from majorgeeks.com) will find it and flush it, but it can take hours. Seeing this crap disappear would be a Godsend. Keep us posted...GOOD news is always refreshing.

I have an Apple Computer...we haven't been hit with as many viral attacks, but they are picking up. If you have good virus software and internet utilities, these things wouldn't be so much of a problem....I haven't had a virus or trojan problem since I switched to an Apple Computer and don't use any Windows software whatsoever.

However, Apple security updates are increasing.

the StopSign commercials are a perfect example of scareware.

There are so many predatory people and companies out there and even with the latest in virus and security software computers are still at risk via email and adds on websites etc. Thanks for this informative post.
