Sean Durfy Resigns from CEO and President of WestJet

WestJet CEO and President Sean Durfy announced his resignation on Monday, March 15, 2010. Sean Durfy cited personal reasons for his departure. Sean Durfy's resignation will be effective on April 1, 2010.

According the press release, Sean Durfy said is it time to "allow others to carry the torch while I spend more time with my young family."

Sean Durfy joined WestJet in 2004 as an Executive VP for marketing, sales, and airport operations functions, as well as the introduction of WestJet owner's communications platform. In 2006, he was appointed President and took on the role of CEO the next year in 2007.

WestJet managed to pull through the toughest year in the airline industry last year. In February, it posted its 19th straight quarter of profitability.

Gregg Saretsky will be the new President and CEO immediately after Sean Durfy's departure. Gregg Saretsky joined WestJet in 2009 as VP of WestJet Vacations. He assumed the role of Executive VP of operations 4 months after.

Sean Durfy has agreed to remain with WestJet until September 1, 2010, and will assist the company with the transition. An executive search to replace Mr. Saretsky's Executive Vice-President, Operations, role will commence immediately.
