Take note of the small switches: One turns on overclocking capability, the other toggles between two overclock speeds: a brisk 10mhz (30% speed gain) or a blistering 12mhz (56% speed gain). The standard clock speed for the Motorola 68000 is 7.67mhz.
You might wonder, "Why on earth would one overclock a cartridge based console?" Many games exhibit slowdown as the CPU struggles to keep up with parallax scrolling, numerous sprites, and other effects on screen. By overclocking, the motorola processor can keep up with the action and eliminate all forms of slowdown. The 2 clock speeds allow me to apply overclock based on game stabilty and to address various levels of slowdown - Viewpoint anyone? (arguably one of the best games to exhibit slowdown and dropped frames, now running smooth as butter @ 12mhz)
Fun Fact: Genesis model 2 CPU's were known to clock much much higher, but the Nomad IC's can't seem to tolerate high levels of OC. Nomad seems to have more in common with model 3 in this respect.
