For a little over a year now, Ning.com, one of the first and most prolific niche-social networking sites, has built a reputation of being overrun with porn networks.  At one point earlier this year, it was reported that 8 of the top 10 Ning subdomains was porn-related.

All of that changes with the start of the new year.  Ning announced that in 1 month, they will no longer be supporting their "Red Light District" that houses the majority of the porn.  This post on their blog explains it all:

Therefore, the decision we’re announcing today to discontinue our Red Light District is a tough one. However, from a practical perspective, this difficult decision is the right one.

While diversity and freedom of speech are important, there are plenty of venues on the Internet for adult content.  This move demonstrates an understanding that having a strong, clean name on the Internet is possibly more effective than catering to pornography.

JD - the current Ning decision has some more implication than "just" getting rid of porn sites.

1.They are removing ALL networks which happen to be behind an adult warning. Also sites that are "vanilla" dating sites or travel sites for gay men. via fosat

2. Adult network creators "own" their content but they cannot get it out after recent Ning API changes. via fosat
