Sony is planning to launch a digital rental plan for the PSP where customers would pay a flat rate to rent games online on a handheld system. The PSP is combating the new Nintendo DSi and smartphones that is taking a huge part of the market.

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president, now is looking at the iPhone and other smartphones as a major threat where originally they believe the two companies are after different markets. Consumers are refusing to carry two devices (phone and gaming system) which is hindering the gaming market for the DSi and PSP. Sony is hoping the new digital rental plan is a revolutionary idea that will win back some of the market the iPhone has stolen.

Then again, if the price is right and the selection is expansive...well, we'll be interested to hear what Sony eventually rolls out.

yeah well i could see it working if you payed a one off price for a rental, like you do if you rent a dvd from blockbuster. so it could be something like £1.99 and you get the game for 3 days or £2.99 for 5 days. id pay for it especially on games i wasn't sure about.

Hey,

Thanks for the email, feel free to use my photo by all means. I think game rentals for the PSP is a great idea and would like to participate, and also as a customer.

Take care.

Renting games is not my thing. What if it takes a week to complete a game? I'd rather buy one
