South Korea General Strike In Response to Riot Police Violence
The Korean Federation of Trade Unions in South Korea called for a general South Korea strike from July 22 to July 24, 2009 in response to a violent clampdown on a strike at Ssangyong Motors Pyeongtaek Plan by the South Korean riot police on July 20, 2009.
The South Korea general strike involves a number of unions from different industries ranging from Korea Metal Workers Union to the National Union of Media workers. This may be bad news for the South Korea's economy, as strikes in recent months have already had large negative economic impacts. In June, more than 18,000 operators of construction machinery went on strike, costing South Korea at least $3.5 billion.
The KCTU expressed a strong pro-democratic, but anti-capitalist sentiment in its press release:
KCTU’s general strike is a stern struggle to stop degradation of democracy, built upon the sweat and blood of the Korean people, and to protect the lives of all workers. The general strike must continue strongly and indefatigably, despite whatever sacrifice and pain that may come in our way, because this July battle will decide the fate of workers – will all workers continue to live as slaves of capitalists or will workers be guaranteed their livelihoods and full basic labour rights?
