It's been more than five years since the last night launch of a Space Shuttle, and viewing tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale in mid-February.The sky was overcast on the mainland, but over Launch Pad A on Merritt Island, the night sky was clear and beautiful.
This short video brings the experience home as thousands gathered on the Florida coast to watch the spectacular night launch of STS-123, the Space Shuttle mission carrying the Endeavor orbiter into the longest shuttle mission to date.

mortaine, good stuff! I'm glad you got to experience a night launch. Incredible, isn't it? Did the earth shake? The really big rock 'n roll, though, came with those Saturn V rockets of Apollo days.

At 12 miles away (the closest you can get without a ticket), the earth didn't perceptively shake. I love the Saturn V's. Did you know the next major phase in NASA exploration will use a modified Apollo capsule to go to Mars and/or the Moon?
