I'm not sure if it's actually cost effective energy wise to build giant buildings like that and it looks more like an prestige project than an attempt to become more "green" The region is known to be one of the worse when it comes to energy consumption and CO2 outlet per citizen.

Spectacular wind turbine project in Bahrain

The oil state Bahrain now realises an old North European dream of building tower buildings powered by 3 integrated wind turbines. The Danish engineers in Norwin and Rambøll Denmark are responsible for the highly specialised technical solutions.

- Connect our 2 forty-three storey office buildings with 3 windmill bridges. - This was the assignment given to Norwin and Rambøll. The three wind turbines provide power for this prestigious building project that is being marketed as Bahrain World Trade Centre.

Noise and security
- This is a dream project for any windmill enthusiast. When we first heard of the idea, we were all overcome by true pioneer spirit, tells Ole Sangill, Director in the Danish wind turbine company Norwin. The 2 Danish companies have worked closely together in order to solve the many technical challenges related to a pioneer project of this kind. The wind conditions have been scrutinized. The risks, noise factors and loads have been calculated in order to estimate the exact construction of the bridges and wind turbines. The main challenges are to avoid noise hazards and to create maximum safety in relation to this spectacular project. – We have now succeeded in finding a solution to the technical challenge which at first seemed like just a wild thought, says Project Manager in consultancy company Rambøll Denmark, Lars Tørrild Thorbek.

First integrated wind turbines
This will be the first project where wind turbines and buildings are integrated into a spectacular whole. In North Europe similar projects have been considered for a number of years. EU have financed studies of integrated wind turbines, but the technical complications have so far prevented contractors from embarking on such projects. Therefore, Bahrain has become the first country to lead the way for wind turbines integrated into buildings. Together with Danish engineers they have facilitated this masterpiece of engineering.
The project is to be completed during the summer of 2006.
