The process of journalism should be participatory - and perhaps one way it can be made participatory is if the public has the opportunity to commission the journalism they want to see.

This article is newsworthy because it provides an example of one way to fund citizen journalism.

asking if it's just me or is the topic on spot.us, "Are SF beaches safe..." too narrow/limiting? (I don't care about, and even if I were in SF I wouldn't)...

I think "crowd funded journalism" is a wonderful concept, I'd hate to see it die on the vine over a too limiting/narrow topic

(the wisdom of the crowd seems to support my view that this is not that compelling of a topic, not one penny has been contributed today, $360 yesterday, $360 today)
