Stanford University in California US has just launched a course called “Facebook for Parents.”  The course, taught in 4 sessions, was created to guide parents through the intricacies of North America’s most popular online social network.

The course, officially named “Create Engaging Web Applications Using Metrics and Learning on Facebook,” touches upon everything from how to make friends and creating status updates, to basic Facebook safety.

The importance behind the course lies in the fact that baby boomers make up only 9% of Facebook’s entire demographic as of 2007, yet they are one of the site’s fastest growing demographic.

As well, with online networks like Facebook being a major part of the social lives of youth, there is a huge need for parents to understand the ins and outs behind the website.   Stanford is hoping to demystify the gap between parents and students using this experimental course.

The 4 day course load includes:
- the psychology behind facebook
- applications you should know about
- how to set your safety settings
