How to hack RFID-enabled Credit Cards for $8 (BBtv)

Radio Frequency ID (RFID, which could also stand for "Really F***ing Insecure, Dude) is all the rage with credit card companies, though they have not done much of anything to actually make them secure. The video in the below story (via boingboing) demonstrates this shocking security failure using a US$8 scanner. You can try this at home.

No, really. You can.

Still want that "convenient" RFID card?

When RFID empnanted credit cards become more popular I can see crooks setting up powerful directional antennas in busy hallways and grab thousands of numbers per day without the card holders having a clue of what was going on
Passive surveillance has no upside for consumer, yet opens a whole new door for abuse. If I didn't know better, I'd think it was actually designed with criminals as the true customer base, with us as the "product".
