Steve Wiebe Attempts New Donkey Kong World Record at E3

Who needs Project Natal when you've got Steve Wiebe playing Donkey Kong? One of the highlights of the E3 conference has been watching Wiebe, the hero of the classic documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, try to set a new high score for the classic arcade game Donkey Kong. The event is being streamed live online.

Wiebe's see-saw battle for the Donkey Kong record against the nefarious Billy Mitchell has turned him into a cult hero among gamers. Since the documentary, Mitchell has captured the record. Wiebe has tried several times to beat Mitchell, but has come up short. In October 2008, Wiebe went for the record at the E for All Expo. He managed to break the million point barrier, but failed to eclipse Mitchell's all-time high score of 1,050,200 points.

Wiebe failed at his first attempt during E3, scoring more than 900,000. He has not yet begun to fight, however, and has already started another attempt. In the words of the great Rudy Tomjanovich, "never underestimate the heart of a champion."

Lest you were concerned that this attempt may not be on the up-and-up, Walter Day from Twin Galaxies was on hand in a referee's jersey to monitor Wiebe's progress.

I, for one, applaud the E3 conference for embracing the glory of The King of Kong. You can have all your modern doo-dads, tweetdecks, and thingamaroos. Give me some old school Donkey Kong action. Even better, give me Billy Mitchell's head on a platter.

Yo Steve,

Just finished watching 'The King of Kong' & want to say what a legend you are. You're so the man for your attitude to that doeschbag 'Billy'.. Had to laugh at one guys comment that he's like one of the top villians!!

Dude you really are such a winner & was so stoked to see you win in the end!!

Take that slimey bastard down!! There was a cheer in the theatre at the end of the movie when it said you beat Mitchell's score for a new record. Keep going son, you deserve it.
