NP Rank:
Stranded Skiers Rescued by iPod
It just wouldn't be Saturday without a hyperbolic iPod story, but this one is totally true: a skier and snowboarder got lost off-piste on Savognin in Switzerland... their mobile phone's battery went flat, and the glow of one of an iPod alerted the rescue helicopter to their presence.
Sharp eyes on that chopper crew.
The two -- a skier and snowboarder, both from France -- had got lost late in the day Friday outside marked runs near the resort of Savognin in southeast Switzerland, said Gery Baumann, spokesman for mountain rescue service Rega.
What kind of iPod was it? What generation? What brightness setting was the backlight set to? Is there a difference in helicopter visibility between, say, LCD and OLED? Without that kind of information, I don't know that I can ever go skiing in remote Swiss mountains again.

According to REGA the rescue took place on the lower left edge of the slope. A military helicopter equipped with infrared night vision gear was already on its way but sent back to the base. Picture "Christmas Tree" photographed by Marcel Schneider.

I live in France, so every winter I have to listen to news adding yet another victim to the seemingly never-ending list of dead up there in the Alps.
I think if I went up there I'd take my i-pod, my mobile, gps, a radio transmitter, a carrier pigeon and everything needed to send smoke signals!!
I don't have figures here, but it seems to me that a lot (over 100? I'll have to check it out) of people die every year in the Alps.
Man if that was rollerblading it would have been banned years ago!!
