Sun Microsystems announced massive layoffs today, involving up to 18% of its worldwide staff.
Sun is also restructuring its software organization with a focus on leveraging the growing momentum of open-source technology.
Sun's restructuring will result in a charge of between $500 million and $600 million over the next 12 months, with about $375 million to $450 million coming in the current 2009 fiscal year.
The company said it should start seeing cost savings in the third quarter of the current fiscal year. Sun expects the restructuring to save it between $700 million and $800 million annually.

A couple of days ago you published the total of lay off at around a 130,000 if I remember correctly, any idea what it is now? We may break a world record I think with each passing day. Wish is not a good thing at all, if I may say so.

The Sun layoffs have not actually taken place yet. While announced in 2008, they will affect workers in 2009. (I know because my husband works at Sun.) This will no doubt be a grim year for layoffs in this country and the RIFs that were announced late in 2008 should probably be counted in 2009's numbers. Just a thought.

Sun's layoffs will occur throughout 2009. This is nothing new, though. Sun has had layoffs at least once every year since 2000. Sun has laid off about as many employees since 2000 as are currently employed by Sun.
