AT&T Lays Off 12,000 Employees
The layoffs continue across the tech industry. Telecom giant AT&T is downsizing 12,000 of its staff.
The Texas-based communications company will be adding new jobs in "other areas", though it's unclear which parts of the company are affected by these layoffs.
The company cited economic pressures and a changing business mix as the reasons behind the cuts.
AT&T also said it plans to reduce its 2009 capital expenditures from 2008 levels. The company said it would issue more specific financial guidance in January, when it announces its fourth-quarter results.
It did say, however, that as a result of the layoffs, it would take a charge of approximately $600 million in the fourth quarter of 2008 to pay severance to affected employees.
The Dallas, Texas-based company said the "planned reduction of approximately 12,000 jobs, or about four percent of the company's total workforce" would occur in December and throughout next year.

Once again I have been laid off from AT&T.. first in december 2004 (when it was SBC) now again December 2008!!. I was rehired just this past March as a Limited Term Service Rep which "supposedly" guaranteed a minimum of 1 year employment not to exceed 3 years!!! We were all given a 3 day notice (on tuesday, only after it leaked out & questioned management ) that our term was up & our benefits are good until December 31!!! (Otherwise management planned on telling us on friday, while handing us our final check) What a way to treat any employee .. now we all have to spend the holiday season filing for unemployment & rescheduling doctor and dentist appointments before 2009!!
