Tetris

One of the most famous video games in the world, Tetris, turns 25 years old today!

With the slogan 'From Russia with Fun', Tetris was designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov on June 6, 1984 in Moscow, Russia.

The game (or one of its many variants) is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system, as well as on devices such as graphing calculators, mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs and even as an Easter egg on non-media products like oscilloscopes.[5] It has even been played on the sides of various buildings,[6][7] with the record holder for the world's largest fully functional game of Tetris being an effort by Dutch students in 1995 that lit up all 15 floors of the Electrical Engineering department at Delft University of Technology.[8][9]

The name comes from the Greek word 'tetra' and 'tennis', which was Pajitnov's favourite sport.

Google also celebrates Tetris on its search page.

I used to have 'Tetris effect' because I played it so much a few years back. Yesterday, in homage to what I did to my brain then, I played it all day again. I am thus far still effect-less.

Tetris must be the game played by most number of people. I don't think you can find single person over the age of 20, who played at least one computer game that did not play Tetris.

Will digital downloads kill the videogames store? That’s the multibillion dollar question facing retailers from Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp to GameStop Corp, as Internet distributors continue to grow.

Tetris was one of my favourite games when I was a child. I  miss the days I played tetris all day.
