NP Rank:
Third Heathrow Runway approved
A third runway for UK airport Heathrow has been approved by the British Government. Despite opposition from environmental campaigners, residents, and even MPs, a third runway will be built and the decision will be made official tomorrow.
Many are saying it will create jobs, however more are saying it will damage the UK's ability to fight climate change indefinitely.
The government has long argued, in principle, that it is in favour of the scheme, subject to noise and air pollution limits, and undertakings about access and traffic congestion.
Alongside the commitment to a new runway, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon is expected to announce increased investment in public transport, including a new high-speed rail link from the airport to central London.

The British government is all over the place, when it comes to an aviation policy: and it always caves in to the airport bosses. Friends of mine live very near Heathrow: the noise is awful! I live quite some way away, near central London (Camberwell, south London). And Im woken up at 5.30 each morning as the first plane from Australia crosses right over my head! I curse: I shout; I scream my head off! Neighbours complain at my behaviour! I curse God and everything She made! But all to no avail.

Planes fly over the White Cross pub on Water Lane in Richmond-Upon-Thames every few minutes heading towards London's Heathrow Airport. Local people have a mixed reaction to the addition of a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport but nearly all would dearly love to have a reduction in noise pollution from these jet aircraft.

31 May 2008 at day of the demonstration. I was there. We started at Hatton Cross tube station and make its way to Sipson village. (This village will be destroyed if the third runway goes ahead) A lots of people had a whistle and made a big noise.
