Toktumi Line 2: Popular iPhone App Experience Outage, New Sign-ups Shut Down Temporarily
Toktumi Line 2, an Apple application that has surged in popularity, experienced service outage at around 5:30 PDT. Toktumi's primary servers received mass server requests, and were knocked offline. While the service has since been restored, Toktumi decided to shut down new sign-ups while they investigate the cause of mass server requests.
we are taking the precaution of limiting Line2 usage to our current customers only until the mass server request investigation is complete
Several major media outlets, including the New York Times, have given Toktumi Line 2 positive reviews. The application allows a second phone number for iPhone users, and allow VoIP phone calls for iPod Touch users. Toktumi Line 2 can make phone calls via WiFi, 3G, or regular cell phone networks. The quality of phone calls is superb, according to David Pogue from the NYT.
The Toktumi Line 2 app is marketed as a business app, offering comprehensive services and ability to save on cost of long distance phone calls. The service it offers is in conflict with AT&T's interest as a cell phone service provider. It is perhaps surprising that Toktumi Line 2 is approved by Apple.
Back in July 2009, Apple rejected Google Voice application for iPhone. Apple argued that Google Voice duplicates functions already exist on iPhone. However, Google Voice fans believe Apple did it to protect the interest of AT&T.

Cool App, but it sounds like another version of Skype. I'm staying with Skype, for now.

I like it. I think it is a concept that required thinking outside the box :)
