Over the last couple of days I have been thinking about dear Mr Murdoch's idea about paying for news - well you an me paying to read his news sites. And as I get thinking things become little more confused as time goes on - and this is why went-a-looking on dear old Go-Ogle!

Top 20 Most Popular Social Bookmarking Websites

Here are the 20 Largest Social Bookmarking Websites ranked by a combination of Inbound Links, Alexa Rank, and U.S. traffic data from Compete and Quantcast. Although no traffic metrics are completely accurate we do believe the data below to be useful for gauging relative audience size.

I haven't added up th sites that are on that page, it would take too long, but it is a lot and I mean a lot.

So, the question is how is Mr Murdoch going to make people pay?

I know that he wants to make a fortune - much as he did in the last 10 years or so - but he is, I think, missing the point. The point being that the web has exploded in the last 10 years or so.

Just look at all those social bookmarking sites! It's unbelievable really. So, if his pages or sites are locked down so as to stop people bookmarking his news, who will read it? Obviously those who have subscribed and those willing to do a pay per click, but how many of us are really willing to do that?

Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit, Newsvine - hundreds of them - all with the ability to drive traffic to your site - so why not embrace it rather than thinking about the penny you have lost by people reading about it on - social bookmarking sites?

While I was thinking about all this, again, Mr Murdoch did say that he will be sueing those who use his content without licence, I think, I got confused - but how are his lwyers going to trawl all those bookmarking sites to instigate those lawsuits - in all those different countries? It is going to take an army of people to find the other people who are driving traffic to the sites that you have closed to public viewing - because you want to make a penny on each click!

Mind-boggling!

But I do wish him well - because he is going to need it.

I did wonder how much he is going to pay the people who are going to be employed 8, 9, 10, hours a day just to look through the bookmarks. Obviously a lot - can you imagine how mind numbing that is going to be?

He could do the same as Reuters, though - and just accept the click-through economy. But Mr Murdoch wants to make money - how he will make money paying all those people is beyond me - but I am not Rupert Murdoch.
