A 95,700 Toyota recall was announced on Wednesday in a joint press release with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (HTSA). The Toyota recall includes '09 and '10 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix and '08 and '09 Scion xD models fitted with 1.8 L engines.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., will launch a voluntary Safety Recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving approximately 95,700 Toyota and Scion vehicles sold in the United States.

Toyota states that in extremely low temperatures possible moisture leaked into the brake system can freeze causing the power assist to decrease, ultimately making brake time increase.

Since the malfunction is due to environmental factors, the Toyota recall will only take place in 19 states:

  • Alaska
  • Colorado
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada,
  • New Hampshire
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

The Toyota recall repair will take approximately one hour and will block all moisture from entering the brake system.

I would question the recalls only being done in the states with low temperatures.  Consideration needs to be taken for any car subject to this defect.  In California for example, many people travel to areas for skiing or other winter endeavors.  Additonally, parts of California freeze during the winter.

Toyota needs to reconsider the limitations of this recall and the possible risks they are imposing on owners of these vehicles.

I will send emails to California senators and legislatures to look into this.

Thats a great idea.

I already sent emails to my senators.

Which CA commision is that?  Is it automobile safety?

Please give me the link.

Thank you

One hours time and a twenty dollar part would have saved Toyota millions of dollars from the class action suit they will be facing this winter - I can not wait to see the case numbers from the class action law suit regarding this recall when the loss of Toyota's brake systems fail in other state other then those disclosed. All of the cars need to be recalled or these that are outside of the 19 states mentioned need to be given notice of a voluntary owner recall in any and all other states. Temperature extremes happen in all of the U.S. states - here in Arizona during the winter months you can travel from seventy degrees all the way to below zero within a hours time and Arizona is not the only state that has this happen. Other states like California, Kentucky, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Texas, and Eastern Washington all have these environmental factors as Toyota calls them.

Toyota needs to notify these car owners in all the U.S. and offer them the choice of bring the vehicle in or return a self addressed envelope to opt out of the recall and if no response is received by the owner within a stated amount of time then Toyota is free and clear from a law suit.

Perhaps the stratedy of Toyota is to offer a limited recall to test the waters of response before offering a comprehensive recall.  If enough people alert Congress, Toyota will have to respond to the public out cry.

Toyota had been so many years dealing with North America winter, yet they found this badly brake system design. for 2009-2010 models. What is the warranty that new device will not fail prematurely ?Toyota should explain more detail what is the different design problem from previous assembling.
