Toyota is set to replace 3.8 million gas pedals on their cars made from 2005 to 2010 in the United States because the pedals can become stuck in the floor mats and cause the car to accelerate suddenly. This is the sixth largest recall ever in the United States.

This announcement follows on the heels on the one in September where the car company said that they would be launching this recall in a critical step to restoring their reputation.

In plans announced yesterday, Toyota dealers will shorten the length of the gas pedal by 3/4 of an inch starting in January, and this will be the solution until new pedals can be installed. The new pedals will be installed starting in April and some will also get a break override system.

This is the largest recall for Toyota. They first told people to just remove the floor mats to help this solution, but they discovered that was not enough.

Among the models that will need to be fixed are the Camry, the Prius and the luxury Lexus ES350. The recall is limited to North America as the floor mats are only sold in North America. It is expected that the recall will cost millions for the car dealers.

Toyota also announced on Wednesday that they were recalling 11,000 Toyota Tundra trucks due to a frame corrosion problem.

“Their reputation has taken a hit because the actual quality has taken a hit,” said Aaron Bragman, an automotive analyst for the consulting firm IHS Global Insight. “That’s absolutely critical for Toyota to get that fixed because that’s the central pillar that they’ve built their business on.”

In Chin a they had a massive recall and in Japan as well. VW has taken over their place as number one and Toyota is now in second place.

Honda seems to come up as well and may very well be number two soon, leaving Toyota in third place.
