Toyota Tundra Recall: 110,000 Trucks Recalled for Frame Corrosion
Around 110,000 Toyota Tundra trucks were recalled due to a frame corrosion problem that could cause the spare tire to fall off. The Toyota truck recall affects the 2000-2003 model years in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington, DC. This is unrelated to the Toyota Tundra recall affecting 2005-2010 model years.
If you own one of the affected Toyota Tundras, you'll receive a recall notice in the mail starting in December (next week). Should you get a recall notice, bring your Toyota truck to a Toyota dealer for an inspection. If your Tundra's rear crossbar is starting to corrode, it will be repaired or replaced at no charge.
Originally, NHTSA's investigation covered only 2000-01 Tundras but during Toyota's investigation of the problem, the number of trucks discovered with the problem grew to include 2002 and 2003 models.

Toyota had a massive recall in China as well due to steering wells that suddenly ceased up.
Maybe why their sales dropped in part and why VW is now number one. Toyota is still number two though.

I bought one of the first Tundras, a 2000. 2 weeks new it refused to start. CD player could play only one disc before getting hot and skipping.Got mad and let 2 CD's play while skipping and unit started smoking.Faceplate was too hot to touch. Steering locked up at 1 month new twice. 2 months new brakes shook vehicle so bad was afraid to drive it. Its almost impossible to get tires to not shake at highway speed. I get road forced balanced and still have shake. Tried goodyear, goodrich, michelin, kumho, dunlop. The best is Michelin. Many owners have had problems these trucks.Toyota treats you like an idiot when you complain. The dealers seem to be instructed to tell you the see or hear nothing wrong. At some point I gave up complaining.Even their corporate office would shine me on.Since I bought my truck in Illinois and now live in Tennessee, I bet they wont replace the tire holder.Maybe a few lawsuits is what they need. I am not a Toyota hater. This is my 6th toyota.I have noticed Toyota's quality is getting worse every year.

The problem is these trucks are made in U.S.A, not Japan. You can expect the same poor quality as the rest of the American made trucks. Tundra radios are made in Mexico by the way. So are many G.M. trucks and their parts. The Japanese have a much better work ethic than America and Mexico.

Who are you? A traitor or a Japanese person? Toyota not only has recalls, but lies about what they really are, as we have seen with the "floor mat recall" that was really the accelerator. They've been doing stuff like that for years-even before they built cars in the US and are just now getting found out. Go move to Japan if they're so wonderful, we need patriotic americans building our own stuff for our own economy, not people who want to generate the Japanese economy! And if you are American, what do you do for a living that makes you so sure that no one has the ability to build quality products here? I happen to believe Americans are very hard working and have many American made items that have been relieable. Unfortunately it's hard to find anything anymore that is made here!!!

Well Laura there was a country full of people about 50 years ago who blindly followed their leader in the name of patriotism & look where it got them. He has a point which you are missing. The lack of quality is not necessarily the American workers fault, it is the management & the required bottom line. American workers will build whatever they are told good or bad, we have the capability to be the best but aren't always. That is not being a traitor or a foreigner just a realest. I think you need to unwrap yourself from the flag & take off the blinders. As to your point of nothing being made here anymore you are correct but it's not the fault of the foreigners it's our consumer hunger for low cost products.

so how exactly is building 70% of your Truck line in mexico or canada helping the US economy?
at 19:03 on February 13th, 2010
I agree with you Laura I would put the quality of my work or that of my employees up against any in the world. It is very unfortunate that some of your respondents don,t feel the same way.

Yea but thats because japan and china make all most every thing for the U.S

Dean I TOTAL agree with you. Hit the nail right on the head.

I read your comments and basically agree with your assesment. My problems have been quite similar. My local mechanic was able to fix the vibration caused by the faulty breaks. also the ABS system really sucks. At present I have to deal with the middle leaf springs on both sides being broken. Should I replace both spring assemblies or just replace the broken leaf? Also the engine light is always on. No real reason....except I think it's using too much fuel. Otherwise I do like the truck...not too big like the new one...not too small for a carpenter.

Man I know exactly what you are talking about, I have a 2008 Toyota Tundra Crew Max and when its cold out in the morning, I am getting a sound of squeeking coming from the bottom of the windshield, I was told by a Tec that there are plastic peice's under there that they will remove if it is bothering me, Well I told the service guy about it one day when I brought my truck in for an oil change, yea he came back and told me the Tec took it for a test drive and he couldn't hear any squeeking. I thought to myself ..yup figure's. Then I brought the truck back for another oil change when it needed it, there was a tapping noise coming from under the hood on the right side. Went through 4 Tec's and the same thing...nope we can't hear that, I pionted right at it and said its coming from this area, They took it out for a strees test and told me the noise I was hearing was the Transfer case ingaging...I called bullshit, Finnaly I got a Tec who knew what he was doing, he found the noise, it was the wiring harness tapping up against this box that was under the right side off the hood like I SAID. Man I drive a Truck for a living I am trained to hear odd noise's. But I supose if the Tec can't hear it the noise dosn't exsist...PLEASE....

I have a 2000 Tundra. I've had to replace the starter. Almost every screw holding parts on the truck have come loose. All the mirrows rattle. My antenna is loose. My 4 wheel drive quit for no reason. My brakes are screwy. The cover plate on the front brakes is a pepple catcher and my truck is constantly squealing. VERY disappointing.

Wow. I drive a Chevy 4x4. I know how you feel. Door handle came off in my hand when I went to get out. Another time parking brake release handle came off in my hand. Knob that controls where heater air is directed broke off when I turned it. I feel like I'm driving a cartoon. Waiting for the steering wheel to brake off when I turn it. Alternator, water pump, parking brake linkage, radiator, speakers, stabilizer bar links,.... it's non stop. 87,000 miles on it now.

I have a 2002 Tundra, just perfect! Also have a Tercel, a Rav4, and a Lexus! All are Great! Toyota is still #1 in my world!

I have a 2003 Tundra and other than crappy original tires I love it. Almost 7 years old now with 60,000 and have had no problems. Still loving this truck!!

Paschen: Seized up, not ceased up. www.dictionary.com As for Toyotas...I love em! Screw made in America (nothing is anymore).Americans, of which I am one, don't strive to go beyond the accepted level of competency. The Japanese do. I drive an old 88 Chevy long bed farm truck and love the way it rides but find me a Toyota and my loyalty will change in the blink of an eye. My brother has one of the affected Tundras but I'd still buy it. Wal-Mart is a Chinese warehouse. Stop shopping there! Soon there will be nothing but Starbucks and Wal-Marts.If you stop shopping at the little stores, they won't be able to survive and Walmart will be the only option - shopping and jobs! Most small store will match the Wal-Mart price to compete. Little profit is better than no profit.www.craigslist.org <--- NOW YOU KNOW.

I own a 2002 and 2008 Tundra. Love them both and have had no issues with either of them. At least Toyota tells you immediatly about problems instead of being like Ford and waiting forever to finally tell or never tell customers about the cruise controls in the Rangers that can just 'catch fire' without any warning. Nice Ford. Thats why I'll always buy a Toyota. Every company has recalls. At least Toyotas are not catching on fire.

Very, very valid statement. As a former Ford fan that went Toyota. I can easily live with the very few problems my Toyota's have had.

I have a 2002 Tundra V6 stick...awesome truck!!! Love to see that Toyota is taking care of a potential problem, not denying fault. Vermont is a tough state on any vehicle and it's not every day you see a company step up and say a corrosion issue is their fault. Thanks Yota!!!

well Im not surprised the frames are rotting that what happens when you use crap steel they should recall all the frame not just the spare tire what do you think the rest of the frame is made of the same stuff looks good on them but that is what happens when you buy a boys truck to do a mans job
at 15:48 on January 15th, 2010
It's not a matter of 'quality of steel' numb nuts. As I understand it (from tech friends at the dealerships), these trucks are assembled from parts manufactured NOT from a single location. It isn't the steel that's poor, it's the coating that's applied that sucks. And (go figure) the coating work done here in the US just happens to be the cause of these rotting frame sections (the rear cross member for the Tundra and the entire frame for many Tacoma's).Regardless, this doesn't deter me from remaining a Toyota die-hard. The frame could rust all to hell, but everything else will just keep on tickin'.

i bought my tundra in 05 and it had 100K on it. its a 2000 and now has over 200K on it. its pulled well over 10,000 lbs and it has been the best truck ive ever owned. i have only replaced the brushes in the starter.
at 09:01 on November 27th, 2009
I have a 02 TUNDRA with 96K miles and have had no problems or had to replace any major parts....Like everything else in life it's a crap shoot. My previous TOY truck from 1991-2001, it had 148K miles before I sold it and I understand it's still running...And we've had a 1995 Camry with 98K and recently a 2005 Corolla for our youngest; once again no problems with any of them.

Anyhow, I go tomorrow to pick up my brand new 2010 "American made" Tundra 4x4 along with it's Mexican made radio. I just pray I'm never disappointed and it will behave well for many years. I've owned four Japanese vehicles in my life and eleven American ones. Loved the Honda, Mazda, Toyota and Kawasaki... Most of the G.M., Ford and Chryslers were ... really disappointing, although I do still drive a '94 Crown Victoria (only ever been driven in the summer). Love this car. It's like driving around in a comfortable living room.

I would still rather push a toyota than drive a ford, chevy, or a dodge.

I have a tundra limited 2000 model with 206000 miles, only had one problem, had to replace the gas cap. Now the dealer I talked to tonight says, if the frame is rusted bad enough that Toyota will buy it back 110 % of resale and more if you purchase a new tundra They scrap the recalled trucks. This is the best truck I have ever owned, now it may get scrapped! SCREW that!!
